muscle cramping

Postby Gary on Mon Mar 31, 2008 9:38 am

Hi Sebastian.
Whenever I do hamstring curls (no matter how much or little weight I use), my hamstrings always cramp up to the point where I have to stop the exercise. Why is that and what can I do to prevent it?

Hey Gary,
There are a few things that you can look into here. First I would be certain that you are consuming enough water (3 to 4 litres a day is likely best for your weight) and potassium magnesium to maintain your electrolytebalance. Dehydration and reduced electrolytes can cause pretty intense muscle cramping.

If that is not the problem then you may be dealing with undertrained and overly tight hamstring muscles. For this I would reduce the weight for a while, go through a slower full range of motion set and then work on stretching the muscle out. Gradually increase the weight again and you should be on track.
